New build Community Centre, Café, Gardens and Multipurpose Hall which also functions as a Church, Dance Hall and Training Centre.
HOW THE PROJECT ILLUSTRATES ‘OUR APPROACH’:
COLLABORATION: This is a project that has come out from a collaborative approach with KHCCC, Livability, the Greater London Authority (GLA), Big Lottery, muf architecture/art, Atelier One and Habitat for Humanity Homes. KILO has been involved with preparing option studies, planning applications and assisting the Client with fundraising and community consultation. The redevelopment of the site consists of a new Church and Community Centre. It will accommodate a new café facing the main street, a multi-purpose hall and roof garden. The collaborative approach has resulted in a fully funded scheme with support from the local authority, providing much needed social/community facilities in the area.
DREAM: Kingsley Community Centre is a living hub, in the local community drawing people from diverse groups together under one roof. The dream is to rebuild the street with a thriving community and affordable housing. KILO has been on the journey with our client to find ways of realising their vision. Although it has been a challenging to fundraise for the project, it is so exciting to be at a stage of signing the construction contract for a new community building on the site. This is a flagship design scheme for the GLA.
BUILD: The project obtained planning permission this year and construction is expected to start in August 2020 with completion anticipated to be April 2021.
The new building will be a cross laminated timber structure (CLT). CLT is a structural, prefabricated panel system used to form walls roofs and floors. The interior will be formed with a high-grade timber creating a contemporary interior and exposed structure. We are also looking forward to the completion of the community garden and peace garden to the rear which is accessible to the public.
